The problem that we have found as parents of an ASD student, is that his needs are not being met by the public school system. Maverick, our autistic son, doesn’t qualify for the self-contained class (one classroom for students that have similar educational requirements) and an inclusive classroom (a mix of typical and non-typical students in order to have the least restrictive learning environment) doesn’t fit his needs or provide a successful learning environment. We had a psychoeducational assessment completed for him by a licensed psychologist that detailed all the helpful and necessary accommodations he would need in an educational setting to be successful. From an emotional standpoint, children on the spectrum suffer at a greater rate from anxiety and depression than typical children. Providing an accepting and loving environment for these children so they do not have to mask their true personality will be an integral part of our program.
Our solution is to create a learning environment specific to each ASD student where they feel safe and part of a community that values respect, individuality, and education. We will employ educators with a background in special education that create individualized programs for each student based on their academic level to get them to mastery in each subject. Educators will use sensory diets, occupational and speech/language goals, as well as peer social interaction to help each child grow. This learning environment will be sensory friendly and provide necessary educational materials for primary school aged children on the autism spectrum.

Our building looks like a school, our teachers are licensed VA teachers, we follow VBCPS calendar, but all of our kids will be homeschooled students. We will assist parents with completing the notice of intent to homeschool and submit to your home school district. Please call us for more information.
We provide support for the in-between kids. The students on the spectrum that are in-between a self-contained SPED class and an inclusion class. Our students find a place to belong at Maverick Learning. Our students have a level 2 autism diagnosis
We have grades one through eigth grade for the 2024-2025 school year. Our goal is to open an upper school so the MLC students can grow and learn in an environment made for them.
Our regular classroom hours are 8:30 - 3:00 Monday through Friday. Check out our academic calendar on the calendar page of the website.
An after-school program will be provided if needed.
A summer program will be optional for students. It is play-based instead of an education-based program because, let's face it, it's summer! This program will provide the comfort of a familiar environment for the kids with lots of FUN!
No we do not. I recommend Jump Start at the Eliza Hope Therapy Center or Autism Consulting and Therapy.
Due to our student to staff ratio, we cannot accommodate students with physical aggression and/or elopement tendencies. We do not provide 1:1 support, our students must be able to work in small group learning environments.
