Maegan Cahoon sits as the President of the MLC board of directors. She founded the school in 2022 and also acts as the MLC school director.
Born and raised in Virginia Beach, she feels a commitment to give back to the community. Maegan graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor's in Communications and a minor in Public Health. She also played NCAA Division 1 volleyball during her career at UNF. Her non-profit experience came from working at Samaritan House in 2011-2012. Maegan has her Investment Advisor license and has worked at Weisert Investment Services since 2016.
After Maverick was diagnosed with autism in 2018, she became an advocate for her son. What she didn't realize was that she would become an advocate for other families with children like Maverick.
Joshua Cahoon sits as Secretary of the MLC board of directors. He and Maegan founded the school in 2022.
Josh owns Coastal Chimney and Contracting with his business partner and runs the contracting and restoration division of the company. He is a Class A contractor with over 25 years of experience. His construction knowledge was very useful when the Cahoon's decided to open a school. Josh and the Coastal Chimney & Contracting team designed and constructed the entire buildout making the school sensory friendly and custom for Maverick Learning Center.
Josh is the child whisperer. Kids always love Josh and that is no different at MLC. Whenever he visits the school, all of the students give him a smile and a greeting. He is also the MLC maintenance man and frequent toilet un-clogger.
Roy Weisert sits as the Treasurer of the MLC board of directors. He has served on the board since November 2022. Roy's passion for helping children with autism began after his grandson was diagnosed.
After over half a century of federal service, Roy retired from DoD in 2024. A 1976 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Roy began his career as a Naval Flight Officer. Assigned to numerous operational fighter squadrons, he made 7 deployments and accumulated 700 F-4 Phantom hours, 2300 F-14 Tomcat hours and 830 carrier landings. He then transitioned to the NAVSEA civil service acquisition field, specializing in business operations and program management. Leveraging his operational experience, he matured his Gaps/Solutions Analyst expertise and served on multiple Flag/General Officer staffs addressing Fleet needs with innovative S&T solutions across DoD and Industry. Roy also founded Weisert Investment Services in 1993 and has served as President since incorporation.
Jessica Harvey joined the board for MLC in February of 2024. With 7 years of experience working with non-profits in the Hampton Roads area, Jessica has focused extensively on children’s charities, bringing a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to supporting diverse educational needs.
Her experience includes working with organizations dedicated to improving the lives of children through tailored support and advocacy. Jessica firmly believes in a holistic approach to education and development, understanding that every child’s needs are unique and must be met with comprehensive, individualized strategies.
Jessica is dedicated to enhancing educational practices and fostering an inclusive environment where all children, particularly those on the spectrum, can thrive. She is passionate about collaborating with the board and the school community to implement effective strategies and advocate for resources that support each child’s success.
She looks forward to contributing her expertise and enthusiasm to the MLC Board and making a positive impact on the lives of children and their families.
Hannah Taylor joined the MLC board in 2024 and assists in fundraising efforts, outreach, and various initiatives.
Outside of her work with MLC, Hannah is the Managing Director at Featherstone Partners, a commercial real estate investment firm located in Virginia Beach. Originally from north Alabama, Hannah moved to the Hampton Roads area in 2012 and resides in Virginia Beach. She attended the University of Georgia and Old Dominion University and is an alumna of the Kappa Delta Sorority (UGA Sigma Phi Chapter).
Hannah is a firm believer in being a “forever student” and brings her passion for lifelong learning to the MLC board.
Gerrold M. Walker, II is a retired U.S. Army officer and currently a Competency Supervisor for cybersecurity at the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC) - Atlantic Hampton Roads Detachment and Co-Director of the Office of Naval Reserve (ONR) NavalX Mid Atlantic Tech Bridge. Mr. Walker joined NIWC Atlantic in 2007. Prior to joining NIWC Atlantic, Mr. Walker worked as an information technology business consultant with Booz Allen Hamilton. In his current role as Competency Supervisor, Mr. Walker manages cybersecurity professionals that support various Navy Program Executive Offices (PEOs) and program offices. In the role of Mid Atlantic Tech Bridge Co-Director, Mr. Walker leads the organization in establishing a regional super connector that enables collaboration across academic, industrial, commercial, and technical boundaries to develop better, faster, and less expensive solutions for our military. Mr. Walker is a 1996 Hampton University graduate with a B.S. degree in Computer Science.
